What brings veterinary professionals together? It’s simple: each other.

Every veterinarian, veterinary technician and veterinary staff member can play an essential role in achieving mental wellbeing in their practice. From caring for animals to caring for each other, it takes all of us to create fulfilling and emotionally safe work environments. Th is goes far beyond our clients and patients. By working together, we create positive impacts within our industry, within our teams, and even within ourselves.

This is exactly why the “Inspire by FVMA” team is so passionate about our Veterinary Wellbeing Champions initiative. Taking cues from the global grassroots campaign, this specialized network encourages, inspires, and guides Florida’s veterinary professionals toward a culture of mental and physical wellness. Each project is led by a trained Wellbeing Champion, who focuses on preventing psychological distress and facilitating career fulfillment. Evidence shows that wellbeing interventions are more effective when the principle of “tiny is mighty” or small, impactful actions practiced over time. Th ere are countless approaches, but each iteration reinforces the power of our community and the impact we can create in shared workspaces.

REFRAME WEEKLY CHECK-INS

Blue Buffalo Veterinary Services Manager Dr. Alex Miller makes team meetings more meaningful at Blue Buffalo with one simple tactic: encouraging attendees to share something positive. By including this quick agenda item, team members can encourage one another, recognize each other’s strengths, build team momentum and envision an upcoming week of positivity and fulfillment.

TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE

While working together at Trenton Animal Hospital, FVMA President Dr. Thomas Hester and associate veterinarian William Hernandez — both 2025 FVMA Power of Ten graduates — promoted mental and physical wellness by inviting hospital staff members to wellbeing walks before lunch. During these brief outings, team members could enjoy a change of scenery, connect with nature, take dogs for a stroll and catch up with colleagues both professionally and personally.

SAY THANK YOU

UFCVM licensed clinical social worker Erica Cuneo brings joy to long workdays with a “wall of thanks,” where hospital staff members, residents and faculty can express gratitude and pay more attention to moments that bring positive emotions. This wall acts as a glimmer of hope as well as a reminder to give thanks — even when things feel overwhelming.

HAVE A SNACK & CHAT

FVMA District 5 Representative and Furry Friends Adoption Clinic Director Dr. Beth Keser opened the door to deeper team connection by sharing snacks and vulnerability. By creating a welcoming environment within the workplace, she established a safe space for team members, encouraged them to take well deserved breaks, and drove intentional communication.

These are just a few simple ways Wellbeing Champions within the “Inspire by FVMA” network prioritize wellness in the workplace. Currently, 15 veterinary professionals have been specifically trained and certified in developing wellbeing strategies with the FVMA. Th is number will continue to grow, and we hope you’ll consider joining us as we explore ways to enhance the wellbeing of Florida’s entire veterinary community.
