This approach focuses on doing what is possible with what is available to improve or save an animal’s life, demonstrating that meaningful, effective care can still be delivered when resources are limited.
“We balance quality of life, pain control, infection management and disease prevention while identifying the underlying cause and implementing appropriate treatment. Due to limitations faced by both clients and the clinic, this process can sometimes take days or even weeks. Strong communication is essential — we regularly check in by phone, adjust treatment plans as needed and remain transparent about limitations and available options,” said Sarah Wingfield, executive director of St. Francis Vet Care.
It is not just about what happens inside St. Francis’ walls; it is also about what happens beyond them. On weekends, the clinic extends its reach through a mobile veterinary unit that travels throughout Gainesville, meeting pet owners where they are. In some neighborhoods, particularly those where residents lack reliable transportation, the team goes a step further by offering house-to house visits to ensure animals receive care.
This approach reflects a clear and consistent philosophy that drives not only St. Francis but also the FVMA Foundation: Veterinary care should be accessible to everyone. For the clients served by the clinic, that principle is transformative.
Many are living within the lowest income thresholds and have limited, if any, financial flexibility to manage unexpected veterinary expenses. Even reduced-cost services can remain out of reach without transportation, flexible scheduling or community-based delivery. St. Francis addresses these gaps. It is a model rooted in both medical judgment and compassion, one that recognizes that imperfect care, when guided by expertise, is far better than no care at all.
This work would not be possible without a key factor: community. St. Francis Vet Care is deeply embedded in the area and, because of its dedication to sustaining the human-animal bond, is supported by a network of local veterinary clinics, companies and partners that contribute supplies, medications and equipment. These contributions help stretch limited resources and ensure that more animals can be treated.
“We’ve learned that for many clients — especially seniors and those with disabilities — transportation is a major barrier.” Medical transport often requires advance notice, so urgent care is often out of reach. In rural communities where veterinary care may be unavailable altogether, we frequently see pets suffering from preventable and treatable issues, such as parasites or manageable chronic conditions like arthritis,” Wingfield said.
Equipment — another care essential often taken for granted in traditional practices — can make a significant difference, expanding the types of services that can be offered and improving patient outcomes. Recognizing this, the FVMA Foundation is stepping in with a $5,000 donation to support the purchase of several key pieces of equipment.
These include a microscope, IV pump, Bair Hugger warming system and a capnograph. Each plays a direct role in patient care and represents an investment in the clinic’s ability to serve patients and clients more effectively. They also underscore the broader role organizations like the FVMA Foundation play in strengthening veterinary care across diverse settings.
For St. Francis, every additional resource translates into expanded impact — more patients seen, more conditions treated and more lives improved. It is a tangible example of how targeted support can amplify local impact.

“Our main limitation is currently space and diagnostics. We often refer cases out for ultrasound and radiology. We also have a 24 hour turnaround for lab work. Having those diagnostics in-house would greatly help ensure timely care, especially for clients with transportation barriers that make follow-up or repeat visits untenable,” Wingfield said.
She also noted the consistent need for urgent care support during critical care-gap periods, including weekends and afterhours emergencies, as well as the need for veterinarians and support staff to remain on call. Options such as pet transport, telemedicine and home visits would also help those without access to transportation.
Lastly, the clinic hopes to fulfill a long-term goal of providing crisis boarding for pets when owners face hospital stays or housing insecurity.
