The FVMA is saddened to report the loss of an incredible figure within our organization and community. On May 15, Larry Gene Dee, DVM, passed away at the age of 83. Dr. Dee was both an exceptional veterinarian and a wonderful person. His dedication to the profession, devotion to his family, and compassion for others left an incredible mark on countless lives. As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, we also celebrate his life and the legacy he leaves behind.
Born on October 26, 1942, Dr. Dee was the second of five children born to Dr. Clarence E. Dee, DVM, and Lucille E. Dee. Raised on a small farm in Broward County, Florida, Dr. Dee developed an appreciation for hard work, compassion, and a love for animals at an early age.
Dr. Dee received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1969, kicking off what would become far more than a career. For Dr. Dee, veterinary medicine was a calling. Alongside his brothers, Dr. Jon Dee and Dr. James Dee, he joined the family practice at Hollywood Animal Hospital, founded by his father and uncle in 1948. Together, they built it into one of the most respected veterinary practices in the southeastern United States.
Known for his exceptional clinical skill, Dr. Dee earned certification from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 1981 and became a Charter Diplomate of the organization, a distinction reflecting his commitment to the highest standards of veterinary medicine. Throughout his career, he authored approximately 20 scientific papers and delivered more than 35 scientific presentations, contributing valuable knowledge and insight to the profession he loved.
Even while practicing full time, Dr. Dee remained deeply committed to education and mentorship. For more than 30 years, he served as a clinical instructor and adjunct faculty member at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, where he helped shape generations of veterinarians through his knowledge, patience, and example.
His leadership extended far beyond the walls of his practice and the classroom. Dr. Dee was actively involved in organized veterinary medicine at the local, state, national, and international levels. Over the course of his remarkable career, he served as president of several organizations, including the Florida Veterinary Medical Association in 1999.
“He was a great leader in our profession, and we all will miss him,” said Dr. Donald Morgan, former FVMA board treasurer.
Along with his many accomplishments, those closest to Dr. Dee will also remember him for his kindness and unwavering devotion to family. His personal life centered around his beloved wife, Rita, his extended family, and his church.
Dr. Dee met his wife, then Rita Fisher, while the two were students at Duke University, and they married in 1967. Together, they built a loving partnership that endured for nearly six decades. They traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, sharing adventures, laughter, and a deep bond that remained steadfast through every season of life.
Even in his final years, as his health declined, Larry often expressed gratitude for the simple blessings that mattered most to him, frequently saying, “I have a loving wife and two loving dogs. What else could I want?”
Together, Larry and Rita also shared a deep commitment to philanthropy and education. Their generosity supported numerous academic, charitable, and community organizations, including the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, Duke University’s chemistry department, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood, the Rotary Club, and many others.
Dr. Dee is survived by his devoted wife; his siblings, Dr. Jon Dee, Dr. James Dee, David Dee, and Barbara Dee Thomas; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who cherished him deeply.
Though Dr. Larry Gene Dee is gone, his legacy will continue to live on through the countless veterinarians he mentored, the patients he healed, the profession he strengthened, and the family and friends who loved him dearly. His life was one of purpose, compassion, and extraordinary service. We thank him for every minute of it and extend our sincerest condolences to his family during this difficult time.
