What is GFI #256?

GFI #256, Compounding Animal Drugs from Bulk Drug Substances, establishes the parameters within which veterinarians may use compounded drugs prepared from bulk ingredients. This means some of the ways veterinarians order compounded medications will have to change, including which medications can be ordered for in-office use and which will require a patient-specific prescription.

Enforcement of GFI #256 will begin on April 1, 2023.
