recognizing one of our fallen.
Dr. Callahan was a DVM who tragically died from gun violence in 2023. As a member of KindVet of Sarasota, Dr. Callahan was a warm and friendly face who met every patient and pet with compassion and love. She was a late-stage veterinarian who started as a practice manager and received her DVM in 2021 from Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Amy Tomasko, who first met Dr. Callahan when she was serving as a practice manager and Amy a technician, had this to say: ” Shawn was bold, direct, compassionate and caring with a heart of absolute gold. Her smile would make anyone smile in return. I am so grateful to have known her and to have been able to grow up in veterinary medicine with people like Shawn to support and encourage me every step of the way.”
The FVMA Foundation and KindVet of Sarasota, along with the Callahan family, have started a campaign to create a memorial scholarship to recognize her impact in the field. This fund will provide a $2,500 stipend to both a UF and LMU (Florida) student annually. Our goal is to raise $125,000 to permanently endow this program, ensuring the memory of Dr. Callahan never fades and that we can inspire the next generation of leaders in her name.
The FVMA Foundation is seeking to raise $125,000 to permanently endow the scholarship fund, ensuring its impact for years to come. To accelerate progress, the Foundation will match donations up to $50,000, and 100% of contributions will go directly toward funding the scholarship.

During the 97th FVMA Annual Conference, the FVMA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, announced a new scholarship initiative to support the next generation of veterinary professionals.
