Why didn’t I receive my certificate in the mail?
FVMA certificates have gone digital! If you have not received your email certificate, please check your spam/junk folder. We can resend the certificate as necessary.
There are a few benefits associated with digital certificates:
– You get immediate access to your certificate
– The PDF is print quality so you can print it at any size
– We can reduce our environmental impact
Why did I not receive the full two-years of CVT membership?
CVT, VPM, and ACT memberships run in cycles. If you applied in the middle of a cycle, you will only be a member for the remainder of the cycle in which you applied.
Can I pay for my membership renewal before I turn in my CE?
No, you must have your CE approved before paying for your membership renewal.
Can I do all of my CE hours online?
Yes, you can complete all your CE hours online until December 2023. The FVMA will re-evaluate this policy at the end of the 2023 calendar year.
Can I send in my CE information early?
Please wait until renewal notice have been sent out in October before submitting your CE information.
If my certification has lapsed, can I be recertified?
Yes, anyone can become reinstated unless they have committed a felony. Please contact membership@fvma.org for more information or to discuss your unique situation.
Can I use clinic hours to fulfil my CE requirement?
No, all CE must be RACE-approved. Clinic hours do not count toward your CE requirement.
Certified Veterinary Assistants (CVAs) are team members who provide daily support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians with tasks ranging from kennel work like feeding and exercising animals to scheduling appointments.
This membership option is open to CVAs who have veterinarian assisting experience and worked in a veterinary hospital setting with live animals. To recognize your outstanding achievements and boost you in your career, CVA certification also grants you membership in to the FVMA!
Note: Student CVA applicants who have fully completed ACT program requirements but have not completed the 500 hours of practical experience may sit for the CVA Final Examination and apply for CVA PPE (pending practical experience). If you applied for CVA Pending Practical Experience (PPE), your certification is contingent upon the completion of 500 hours practical experience within one year of your CVA test date. Failure to complete this work experience requirement within one year from your testing date will cause the certification to expire without any option for renewal.
You can email your completed practical experience completion form to membership@fvma.org.
► Complete at least nine months of an ACT-approved high school or adult learning program designed to prepare students for employment in the animal care industry.

► Complete a minimum of 500 hours of practical veterinary assisting experience. At least 250 hours must be in a veterinary hospital setting working with live animals. The student must be directly supervised by a licensed DVM or a CVT; up to 250 hours of the total can be school lab time, defined as non-lecture time, wherein the student applicant performs and appropriately utilizes related veterinary assisting skills under the supervision of the VAI.
► Score 70% or higher on the Certified Veterinary Assistant Final Examination.
